Haiku-Video, Winter # 2, Snow

This is the second of my Haiku-Videos. It´s still winter here, so, naturally, it´s a winter theme. For the first I wrote the Haiku and then looked for some shots that I had in my archive which would go with it. Now for the second, I´ve taken the shots to illustrate the Haiku which I wrote after seeing the winterscene – everything is a lot more interwoven now. The whole thing is rounder now.

Staircase, Leipzig, Germany

I was wandering around Leipzig a couple of years ago and I passed an apartment house. The door was open and I popped in and quickly took this shot. It was an old building and the staircase was dark but the light flooding through the window gives everything a strange light. It´s technically a mess but it has a quality that I like.

The Old South Cemetery, Munich, Germany

Maybe it´s a product of getting older – looking for a good place to be put to rest – but cemeteries and graves fascinate me. I can spend hours walking through them looking at the graves, reading the inscriptions and thinking about who is buried there. One can also learn a lot of social history in cemeteries too. The Old South Cemetery is a good place to wander around. It´s been out of use for decades and is now a sort of recreational space in the middle of Munich. People come here to jog, walk, eat their lunches or just to sit and meditate. There are quite a few Munich notables buried here, but also a few world figures like Ohm or Senefelder who invented the lithography. Anyway I spent a long day here one summer, photographing the place. I´ve edited some of the pictures together and here they are!

The Unknown

This is a video I made a while ago about a small cemetery in which the remains of Nazi victims are buried. Their names are not known – hence the title – but many of the victims who died in the were recorded – with typical Nazi efficiency, so I simply picked some of those names at random and had them spoken. This project meant a lot to me, I visited the cemetery on many occasions and the idea slowly took shape in my head.

I took this on the way to the Torino Hut. The Torino Hut is not the most pleasant of places to stay but the surroundings are wonderful.

This is also a spectacular area of crevasses.
